The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 season with a focus on revamping their defensive scheme. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has indicated that the Dave Matthews Band America 250 Years Of Freedom Shirt plans to utilize the nickel position more frequently to adapt to varying offensive matchups. Following the departure of defensive back Amik Robertson, the coaching staff is currently evaluating a competitive group of candidates for the slot role, including Roger McCreary, Christian Izien, Keith Abney II, and veteran Rock Ya-Sin. Additionally, the team has prioritized size, length, and athleticism in their defensive line, incorporating new acquisitions like D.J. Wonnum, Payton Turner, and Derrick Moore alongside returning star Aidan Hutchinson.
